Shalla at the Scottish book Trade Conference
Shalla and Jayne attended the Scottish Book Trade Conference in Edinburgh recently wearing their hats as publishers and as booksellers. The conference attracts representatives from all aspects of the world of books including wholesalers, publishing companies big and small, and booksellers from independents like Curly Tale Books to high street chains like Waterstones. It was an interesting day with everything from creating interesting window displays to how to create links with the community. It was great to meet up with other small publishers who, like us, are focused on producing just a couple of high quality titles a year. The most terrifying bit was when Shalla bravely took part in the ‘Fever Pitch’ session when publishers flag up books due to be published during 2017. Along with more experienced reps from companies like Floris, Pan Macmillan, Freight and Saraband, Shalla had just four minutes to present! As we’d never been to the event before Shalla gave a quick run through of all of our titles so far and she gave a sneak preview of two titles we hope to release later this year.
So, it’s only fair we tell you about them too. We’re planning a book for toddlers called Jasmine’s Jumpers written and illustrated by Shalla Gray. With glorious bright illustrations this little story is about a wee girl who likes to wear jumpers! She wears a different one every day of the week and we see all the different things she gets up to. We’re also publishing a new book by storyteller Renita Boyle with illustrations by Mike Abel. It’s called The Strange Visitor and is a retelling of a traditional Scottish tale with black and white pictures in a graphic novel style layout. We’re really looking forward to seeing it! We’ll keep you posted about the progress of these two exciting projects.
