You’ll have noticed the Biosphere Certification Mark situated prominently on the home page of our website. If you click on the image, it takes you to the highly informative website of the Galloway and South Ayrshire Biosphere (GSAB). So what does the Certification Mark mean, and why are we so proud to have been awarded it?

The Certification Mark acknowledges that Curly Tale Books follows the principles of the Biosphere, the most relevant of which is to, as far as possible, run the business in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. At Curly Tale Books we behave strongly that sustainable development is the only way forward for the human race, to so this was embedded in our business ethos before we applied for the Certification Mark. We have always tried to operate in a way that minimises our impact on the environment; for example by using FSC certified paper in our books. In 2019 we took the decision that all our books are printed on 100% recycled paper, and this will continue in the future. We also only print our books within the UK, reducing our carbon footprint as much as possible. This also helps us to work together with local businesses to make an amazing product.

Another requirement of the Mark is that we promote the valued characteristics of the Biosphere as you know – many of our books showcase the Biosphere in all its glory – Charlotte’s Woolly Yarn for example, the first book to have the Charter-Mark, takes the reader on a tour of Dumfries and Galloway, visiting some of its beautiful landmarks.

Since the reprint of Charlotte, the books Mustard and Pepper, Strange Visitor and Nip Nebs and the Last Berry all have featured the Charter-Mark to the GSAB, so purchasers are not only supporting a small business of our books, but are also helping to support the work of the GSAB.

You can also get involved by becoming a proud supporter, which is really simple, just check out their website here.
