Fabulous New Scots Picture Book

New book from Curly Tale Books

We are delighted to announce that we are currently (impatiently) awaiting the arrival of our new picture book ‘Nip Nebs.’ We’re hoping this beautiful book will be at Curly Tale HQ in Wigtown (Scotland’s National Booktown) during early December, but you can pre-order through our shop on this website and we’ll post your copy out as soon as we get them in.

Nip Nebs is a delightful story in Scots by storyteller Susi Briggs with fabulous illustrations from artist Ruthie Redden. It follows the character, based on Jack Frost, as he weaves his magic across a winter landscape. There are fairies to spot in each picture and the language is lyrical with new Scots words to play with on your tongue. But if there’s anything you don’t understand there’s a glossary and translation in the back of the book.

The books is designed to introduce wee ones to Scots but will also appeal to people who love language and delight in the sounds of new words. The illustrations also mean that the story is easily accessible to non Scots speakers too.

The book will be selling at £9.99 but for a limited launch period (until Christmas Day) the book will be available to order through our shop for £8.00 plus p&p.

Susi was inspired to write the book from stories told to her as a child by her father and she draws on the delight she felt learning new Scots words. The book has been endorsed by the Robert Burns World Federation for the encouragement it gives to children to celebrate the Scots language.
